Kru David Spagnolo
President – South African Muaythai Organisation (SAMO)
Founder & Head Instructor – Elite Muaythai
“Knock down seven times, stand up eight.”
With a martial arts journey spanning more than five decades, Kru David Spagnolo has dedicated his life to the practice, teaching and development of martial arts and combat sports. Beginning his journey in 1974, David trained under the respected Shihan Stuart Booth, earning his 3rd Dan in Goju Ryu Karate and establishing the technical foundation and discipline that would shape his lifelong commitment to martial arts.
His passion for combat sports eventually led him to Muay Thai, where he continued to develop his skills both as a practitioner and instructor. His dedication to traditional Muay Thai and Muay Boran culminated in achieving Khan 10 through the Kru Muaythai Association in Thailand, following training at Luktupfah Muaythai & Muay Boran under Senior Grand Master Chinawut Sirisompan.
David has also represented South Africa internationally, serving as a referee at the WMO World Championships in Thailand, gaining valuable experience on the international stage and further strengthening his knowledge of Muay Thai competition, officiating and technical standards.
Today, David serves as President of the South African Muaythai Organisation (SAMO), where he is committed to the continued development, professionalisation and growth of Muay Thai in South Africa. Through SAMO, his focus is on establishing strong structures for athletes, coaches, officials and promoters while encouraging high standards of governance, safety, technical development and sportsmanship.
As the Founder and Head Instructor of Elite Muaythai, David has created more than just a training facility. Elite Muaythai is built around a strong family-oriented culture in which students support, challenge and inspire one another. From beginners and children to recreational practitioners and competitive fighters, every student is encouraged to develop their skills, confidence, discipline and character.
David is also the President of Knockout Nation, a Muay Thai promotion providing athletes with opportunities to compete and showcase their abilities, and President of Valor, a K1 kickboxing promotion sanctioned by WKU K1 South Africa. Through these platforms, he continues to contribute to the development of competitive combat sports and provide opportunities for athletes to progress in their careers.
At the heart of David's teaching philosophy is the belief that Muay Thai develops far more than fighting ability. It teaches discipline, respect, perseverance, humility, confidence and the ability to overcome adversity. Whether a student steps into the gym to improve fitness, learn self-defence, develop discipline or pursue a competitive fighting career, David believes every person has the potential to become stronger—both physically and mentally.
After more than 50 years in martial arts, David remains committed to learning, teaching and giving back to the martial arts community. His journey continues with the same principle that has guided him from the beginning:
Knock down seven times. Stand up eight.
